What are the Four Transformations in Zi Wei? Table for the 10 stems

The Four Transformations (Tứ Hóa) are four “transformation stars” — Hóa Lộc, Hóa Quyền, Hóa Khoa and Hóa Kỵ — attached to four stars of a Zi Wei chart according to the heavenly stem of a year. The stem of your birth year gives the chart's natal transformations; the stem of each later year gives that year's annual transformations. There are ten heavenly stems, so there are ten sets, repeating every ten years. The table on this page is exactly the one Inti Soul's Zi Wei engine uses; some schools use different stars for a few stems, so the page states its convention. What the four transformations are about

In the traditional reading, each transformation lends the star it attaches to a particular tone. The palace holding the transformed star is where that tone shows most clearly.

Hóa Lộc — ease and resources.
Hóa Quyền — initiative and responsibility.
Hóa Khoa — learning, reputation and timely help.
Hóa Kỵ — a sticking point that calls for patience and clear words; not a fixed omen of bad luck.

Following the convention of Inti Soul's Zi Wei engine, in the order Lộc, Quyền, Khoa, Kỵ:

Natal and annual transformations

The natal transformations follow the stem of the lunar year you were born in — counted from Lunar New Year, so anyone born in January or February should check whether they were born after Tết. For example, someone born on 15/05/1990, a Canh Ngọ year: Thái Dương takes Lộc in the Spouse palace, Vũ Khúc takes Quyền in the Children palace, Thái Âm takes Khoa in the Spirit palace, Thiên Đồng takes Kỵ in the Wealth palace. The annual transformations change every year and also start at Tết:

2026, Bính Ngọ, from Tết on 17 February 2026: Thiên Đồng takes Lộc, Thiên Cơ takes Quyền, Văn Xương takes Khoa, Liêm Trinh takes Kỵ.
2027, Đinh Mùi, from Tết on 6 February 2027: Thái Âm takes Lộc, Thiên Đồng takes Quyền, Thiên Cơ takes Khoa, Cự Môn takes Kỵ.

Why some sources list different transformations

Zi Wei books do not fully agree on the table: for a few stems, the star taking Hóa Khoa or Hóa Kỵ differs between schools, most often for the Canh, Mậu and Nhâm stems. There is also a “flying transformations” school that uses each palace's own stem to send transformations to other palaces; Inti Soul's engine does not calculate flying transformations. When comparing two charts or two articles, check which table they use before drawing conclusions.

Reading the transformations usefully

The transformations point to themes; they do not fix outcomes. A Hóa Kỵ in the Career palace does not say you will fail at work; it suggests that area is easy to get stuck in and worth preparing well. Always read a transformation together with the palace holding it, its three-harmony and opposite palaces and the current decade, rather than one star on its own.
