Birth time unknown: can you still read Zi Wei, Bazi or a birth chart?

Without a birth time you can still read Zi Wei, but only as an approximate chart — because the Soul palace, the Body palace and where the stars fall across the 12 palaces are all calculated from the birth hour. How much is missing differs between systems: Bazi loses its hour pillar but keeps the Day Master; a birth chart still has your Sun sign and the positions of the planets but no ascendant; numerology does not need a birth time at all. Zi Wei without a birth time

In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the Soul palace is placed from the lunar birth month and the birth hour; the element class is derived from the Soul palace; the Zi Wei star and the whole set of major stars are then placed from the element class and the lunar birth day. So a missing birth time means missing almost the entire 12-palace structure, not a single detail. When you choose “birth time unknown”, Inti Soul still builds the chart using the Horse hour as a temporary anchor and marks it clearly as approximate, so the reading does not claim too much.

Still worth reading: the stem and branch of your birth year, your zodiac animal, and which four stars are transformed into Lộc, Quyền, Khoa and Kỵ by the birth-year stem — even if it is not yet certain which palaces they sit in.
Less reliable: the Soul palace, the Body palace, the element class, the major stars in each palace and the decade cycles.
If you know a time window (such as “in the morning”), compare a few charts across that window instead of choosing one.

Bazi without a birth time

Bazi consists of four pillars — year, month, day and hour — eight stem-and-branch characters. Without a birth time, Inti Soul drops the hour pillar entirely, builds the chart from the other three pillars (six characters) and calculates the elements on those six. The good news is that the Day Master — the heavenly stem of the day pillar, the anchor of the whole chart — is still correct, along with the birth season and most of the element balance. The hour pillar is usually read for later layers of life and how a person applies their strength; without it, conclusions that rely on the hour pillar should be skipped, not guessed.

Still correct: the year, month and day pillars, the Day Master and the birth season.
May change once the hour is known: missing elements, element weights, and whether the Day Master is strong or weak.
Born late at night: some schools switch to the next day's pillar from the Rat hour, so if you remember “close to midnight”, check the day pillar too.

A birth chart without a birth time

Inti Soul's astrology engine calculates the ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses only when it has both the birth time and the coordinates of the birthplace; if either is missing, these layers stay empty rather than guessed. The planets can still be placed from the birth date (the engine uses midday as its anchor), so the Sun sign is almost always right, unless you were born on the very day the Sun changes sign. The Moon, however, moves about 12 to 15 degrees a day, so if it changed sign that day, the Moon sign is uncertain too.

Numerology does not need a birth time

Pythagorean numerology uses only your full name and birth date: the Life Path, the Birthday number and the personal year come from the birth date; Expression, Soul Urge and Personality come from the letters of your name. Recover your birth time before picking one at random

A guessed birth time is riskier than the “birth time unknown” box: the chart looks complete but is built on wrong data. Before choosing, try these sources and note how certain each one is.

Birth certificates, prenatal records or the records of the place of birth usually give the most precise time.
Ask parents or relatives for concrete markers: before or after lunch, whether it was light yet, who was on duty that day.
Born in southern Vietnam between 1960 and mid-1975: clocks then ran on UTC+8, one hour ahead of Vietnam's time today; move the time back one hour before entering it.
Born abroad: enter the time by the local clock of the birthplace and watch for daylight saving if that place used it.
